What is Dip Moulding?

Dip moulding is a versatile plastic forming process that uses a heated mandrel (steel or aluminium) dipped into a liquid PVC vinyl tank. As the PVC cures around the mandrel, it forms durable plastic components.

The Dip Moulding Process:

  1. The mandrel is heated to ±190°C.

  2. It is dipped into liquid PVC vinyl.

  3. Plastic cures around the mandrel.

  4. The coated mandrel is placed in an oven for complete curing.

  5. Finished parts are removed with compressed air.

This technique is ideal for producing protective coverings, grips, sleeves, and custom-moulded components.

What is Dip Coating?

Dip coating follows the same process as dip moulding but with one difference: the PVC layer remains permanently on the mandrel, creating a durable protective coating for metal tools, handles, and components.

Advantages of Dip Moulding

Dip moulding offers a wide range of benefits for manufacturers and startups:

  • ? Low upfront cost – no expensive injection moulds required.

  • ? Scalable production – simply add more mandrels for higher output.

  • ? Custom finishes – from polished soft-touch coatings to rough-textured surfaces.

  • ? Tailored properties – additives for UV resistance, anti-static, or anti-microbial performance.

  • ? Cost-effective prototyping – fast and affordable testing before large-scale runs.

Limitations of Dip Moulding

While dip moulding is highly adaptable, it is limited to PVC-based materials. Unlike injection moulding, it cannot use plastics such as ABS, Nylon, LDPE, or HDPE. However, PVC’s flexibility with additives makes it an excellent choice for most applications.
