This umbrella base was manufactured exclusively for a client and features a clean, elegant design with strong visual appeal.
Rotational moulding is ideal for products like this where smooth curves, organic shapes and design flexibility are essential. For this project, Contact Plastics also applied specialised finishing processes to achieve refined edges and neat mould lines. The product is an excellent example of multi-process manufacturing, combining rotational moulding, injection moulding and digitally fabricated stainless-steel components such as laser-cut plates and tubes.

Umbrella Bases - The Perfect Illustration of Mixed Manufacturing
This umbrella base was originally developed to compete with imported products from Italy and the USA. While reducing the landed cost of imported alternatives was achievable, what truly stood out was the final product’s superior quality, durability and market appeal.
Manufacturing this product required close collaboration between the injection moulding, rotational moulding, design and development teams. Producing all processes under one roof reduced costs, removed unnecessary logistics, maintained design consistency and streamlined final assembly.
Rotational Moulding Provides Access to a Host of Visually Appealing Designs
Another major advantage highlighted by this case study is that designing for rotational moulding unlocks product shapes and forms that are difficult to achieve with injection, dip or compression moulding.
Large hollow forms, curved surfaces and organic shapes are efficiently produced through rotational moulding, making it an excellent choice for decorative outdoor products such as umbrella bases.
